O convidado desta sessão é Pierre-Jacques Pernuit (Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne), que falará sobre a sua investigação, numa intervenção intitulada “Thomas Wilfred’s Clavilux Junior: Mobile Color and the home entertainment for the future of art”. A moderação estará a cargo de Filippo De Tomasi (EVAM/ICNOVA).

 

Clavilux Junior, realizado pelo artista Thomas Wilfred em 1928, é um dispositivo de luz colorida que pode ser incluído entre as criações do movimento norte-americano Mobile Color (1920-1930), uma série de experiências plásticas com luz artificial, descritas na época como um novo medium para as artes. Para estes artistas americanos, as máquinas que utilizavam luz artificial constituíam uma melhoria tecnológica do medium pictórico, um medium alternativo a inovações como a fotografia e o cinema. Ao implementar pureza dentro dos mecanismos das suas máquinas, os artistas da Mobile Color consideravam a luz como um medium efémero e desmaterializado, o veículo certo para continuar o trabalho dos primeiros pintores abstratos. Na primeira metade do século vinte, estas máquinas procuraram implementar no seu núcleo soluções técnicas para problemas estéticos. No início dos anos trinta, Clavilux Junior de Thomas Wilfred foi descrito enquanto sério concorrente da rádio e da televisão, no que dizia respeito ao futuro do entretenimento doméstico. De acordo com Wilfred, Clavilux Junior era um medium puramente visual, uma máquina que descreveu como uma “televisão que transmite espetáculos puros de luz colorida”.

This session’s invited speaker is Pierre-Jacques Pernuit (Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne), who will talk about his research in a communication entitled “Thomas Wilfred's Clavilux Junior: Mobile Color and the home entertainment for the future of art”. The session will be chaired by Filippo De Tomasi (EVAM/ICNOVA).

 

The Clavilux Junior, created by the artist Thomas Wilfred in 1928, is a color-light device that can be placed among the creations of the 1920-1930s American-based movement of Mobile Color, a series of plastic experiments in artificial light described at the time as a new medium for the arts. For these American artists, machines that used artificial light were a technological improvement of the medium of painting, an alternative medium to such innovations as photography and film. Implementing purity within the mechanisms of their machines, Mobile Color artists saw light as an ephemeral and dematerialized medium, the right vehicle to continue the work of early abstract painters. In the first half of the 20th century, these machines sought to implement in their very core, technical solutions to aesthetic problems. Thomas Wilfred’s Clavilux Junior was described in the early 1930s as a serious competitor to radio and TV for the future of domestic entertainment. According to Wilfred, the Clavilux Junior was a purely visual medium, a machine he described as a “TV that broadcasts pure spectacles of colored-light”.
